Researchers also found that codependent symptoms got worse if left untreated. The good news is that they’re reversible. This chapter is not written as an answer to your codependent issues, but more as a method of identifying if you are in a codependent relationship.

Reversing the symptoms are a much more in-depth proposition and can be found in the reading of Codependent No More, Melody Beattie’s seminal book on the subject.  

The first edition was written in 1986 and remains the bible of controlling and reversing codependence. The book describes detachment, not being a victim, living your own life, acceptance, communication, and leaning to live and love again, among many other possible improvements. It even discusses 12 Step programs, so for those of you who have attended AlAnon meetings, don’t be surprised if releasing yourself from codependence looks a lot like what you’re hearing in meetings.

Codependent No More is much more than what you receive by attending meetings. Used properly, the book can be for what Alcoholics Anonymous became for alcoholics; a “how to” guide of how to survive and recover from a seemingly hopeless state of mind and body.
